Four Kiwi chefs have been announced as semi-finalists in this year's S.Pellegrino Young Chef competition, proving New Zealand punches above its weight when it comes to culinary talent.

Tom Hishon of Orphans Kitchen, Christopher Walker of Roots Restaurant, Josh Barlow of The Grove, and Leslie Hottiaux of Apero Food & Wine have been announced as the competition's Pacific region semi-finalists.

The next challenge for the chefs will take place in Melbourne in late July, where they will recreate their signature dish for a judging panel and have their plates critiqued based on five categories: ingredients, skills, genius, beauty, and message.

The Pacific region's winner will be announced in August, and they will be one of 10 finalists to compete in the grand finale on October 13 in Milan, Italy.

Christchurch's Roots Restaurant is keen to add to their winning repertoire, after taking out top spot as Cuisine's Restaurant of the Year 2015. Walker, their sous chef, says he is "excited to share what we do".
